Drabble: Oraya 26

“So I was thinking,” Nino said over the melody he was coaxing from the strings of his guitar.
Satoshi looked up at him from where he was seated on the floor.
The Oraya’s attention felt consuming and Nino bravely fought down the heat threatening to rise to his cheeks. Satoshi had always just watched him when he played and today was no exception.
“I still don’t know what to do,” he said and looked down on his fingers.
The Oraya blinked slowly, waiting.
“So I figured I’d help you until we figure something else out.”
Much to Nino’s surprise, Satoshi didn’t protest immediately.
“I mean, we can’t just go out and find random girls for you,” he continued and ignored that Satoshi easily picked up that he had only said girls, “what do you do when you’re- you’re-”
“When I’m not a prisoner or a slave?” The Oraya suggested helpfully, and Nino ignored the sardonic tone.
“When you’re free,” he finished, correcting.
Satoshi shrugged. “I would probably have been mated now if I hadn’t left Homestead.”
“Homestead?”
“Where I come from.”
Nino’s ears perked up. The Oraya never spoke of his past and how he’d arrived here. “Why did you leave?”
He instantly regretted asking that when Satoshi appeared to close up, his usual soft features hardening.
“Mated?” Nino amended. “What do you mean?”
Satoshi shrugged, his face losing some of the guarded look. “Humans marry, Orayas mate. Simple.”
Something churned in Nino’s stomach; something he ignored for the time being. He smiled a bit. “But what do you do then?”
Satoshi shrugged.
“I want to help you,” Nino continued.
“You can’t,” the Oraya said, sounding tired all of a sudden. “You can’t do that to your friends.”
“It doesn’t matter if they don’t like it.”
“Maybe it should,” Satoshi said, looking at him with unreadable eyes. “Maybe you should care about yourself.”
“Unless you have a better idea, then you should let me decide what I want to do. It’s my body,” Nino said stubbornly.
The Oraya crawled over to him where he was seated on the bed, and Satoshi crossed his arms beside him and let his head rest on his arms. “You have no reason to do this.”
“I want to.”
Satoshi straightened up and his black eyes glittered. Nino reached up to touch the black markings on the sides of the Oraya’s head and Satoshi leaned into his touch.
“I’m attracted to you,” Nino revealed, feeling exposed, “and not just because you are what you are.”
Satoshi didn’t say anything immediately, but he lowered his eyes.
“That’s dangerous,” he said at length. “But I am grateful.”
“When the cottage is ready for you,” Nino said, his voice shaky – unwilling and unready to deal with Satoshi’s gratitude, “we’ll talk about this.”
The Oraya nodded.
